Yesterday night we had a great conference about Casino Royale -- both the 1953 novel and the 2006 film -- and about how the representation of Britishness has changed. A lot of paratextual elements too, that is to say how the novel and the films were promoted, in what particular way they were received and so on. Then my friend and I went to the restaurant with two teachers and the guest, and had a great time talking about films and research and teaching. I absolutely love looking at paratext and its influence on the audience of a particular work. I feel kind of lucky to be entering the academic world just as this field is starting to be accepted not only as a novelty, but as a viable way of exploring a text. I somehow always manage to slip a little bit of book history and paratextual studies into my classes and I've found it to be very illuminating.
